LIFE present a manifesto for the disillusioned, and you feel it through the music. Hull based four-piece understand the fakery and foolishness in the notions of ‘a stone’s throw away’, as though London is the city of life and love and luxury and everything else is some cultural roadkill carcass kicked to the side of the streets.
But, as always, the human spirit conquers all, through an earth-heavy root in the DIY mentality that solidifies so many morals and forms of dedicated motivation to the cause of creating sharp, seductive and explosive punk rock. LIFE, epitomises this non-stop ethic.
The new single that landed via its own label Afghan Moon, is an extension of this cannonball of energy and intensity. In Your Hands comes an acid-spit of social commentary narrating the end of the world whereby eye contact is enough cue for a man to kill another. Fidgets and fizzles of strangulated guitars scream and hiss in the background like live wires teasing a puddle of water; the vocals: a laughing hyaena before the next meal; the wall of noise, the army of attacking audio delivering chaos and catchy cacophony that allows one to visualise the veins on the necks of this highly charismatic band in all its anarchic, distorted pop sensibility.
Aside from the angst and the anger the song is fun. It just touches the 2- minute mark confirming it as a diamond of a single. It validates the hilarity in our own hopelessness, the quirks and kinks of the damage and destruction upon every skull-sucking drum beat or the skin-stripped static-wrapped television signals that warp in a whirlpool of spasmodic motion from the use of space, atmosphere and bizarre attention to barbed detail.
I’ve yet to witness the lads live, but from tunes like this; that combine an array of genres jumping off the edge into a vortex called output, one can safely assume when the ears bleed, the brain is left satisfied. Great stuff and my eyes are open.
LIFE’s new track pins the problems of the modern world up against the wall; a bullfight of mankind and his morals with twisted vision, aggression and attention that all great pop singles should stand as representing. Boom!
