Released 5 August 2016 via Hologram Records
There’s nothing quite like untouched, untainted euphoria. Life is an edit, and Hologram Teen provides us with a busting blossom of euphoria in its most clean cut and seductively sweet formations.
So blinding, so beautiful, it leaks from the speakers, with edges sharp enough and the presence of a party just the right level of intimate; you can taste the sweat in the air.
The hashtag on the band’s official Soundcloud account reads, “deep house, house, techno, minimal house, micro-techno”, all of which, make no sense – fair enough have an identity, but when the songs stand on its own two feet this well, it enters a realm of purity that no man has encountered before, beaches scant of footprints, moons vacuous of external life. Admittedly, the “micro-techno” term has something mysterious, magical and fantastical about it, a surreal atmosphere, a daydreaming edge borderline vapour existence, but this tune is something born and raised on its own terms and in its own attacks and defences.
Opening number Marsangst is the first tune of two on this small double-sided, digitally released single. It punches and pummels with technological brilliance. Imaginations of walking through a forest built by Tetris blocks, itching and fidgeting shapes of psychedelic infused noises whisper in the background, heavy-hearted drums dig into the solid ground, whilst shifting platforms of multi-coloured corrugations assemble strong and supreme, ethereal and wild.
It has a freedom, a youthful agility and a formidable breath of fresh air that stands it apart compared to other techno-twitching gems in the contemporary techno-twitching age.
As Marsangst fades away, next gem Hex These Rules (awesome title) enters the equation. Still captivating, utterly spellbinding, sprinkles stardust onto a system shocked by cold ocean water but bathing under a bright hallucinogenic sun. It radiates vibrancy, urgency, melodic squelches of keyboards climb the tiles, celestial transmissions of vocals swirl full of motion in the background, twinkling house keys always hitting the right notes that could make the most depressed of devils smile. It’s a wonderful sample that adds true sophistication, control and command over a tune that already asserts itself as a ventriloquist for all raving puppets.
Never losing its retro-fried aesthetic, features of number-crunching, cranked-up and calculating basslines snake the surface as a small triplet of female vocals whistle and swoon to the joyful noise of hypnotizing razzmatazz. The song ends and the spell is broken, but no lesser in strength embodying the total power of a techno-fitted afterglow, motoric, meteoritic and transient.
