Chicago–Seattle singer-songwriter Julie Byrne released her sophomore record, Not Even Happiness, in January. The release brings a jangly folk-pop slant to her already-brilliantly ethereal sound. Released through New York label Ba Da Bing Records, Not Even Happiness is not so much a departure as it is a landing; a landing onto the kind of musical accomplishment that deserves to be consumed by all, whether in isolation or as a shared experience.
Byrne manages to create multiple soundscapes with modest instrumentation – a distant organ muted in the fog, the foreground filled with hushed-yet-tenacious vocals while the listener leans on old faithful: the acoustic guitar played with delicate craft. It’s no wonder people have spoken the names Julie Byrne and Leonard Cohen in the same sentence.
Ba Da Bing Records joined Bandcamp and 100s of other artists and labels in showing their support for civil liberties by donating their profits from Friday 3 February 2017 to the ACLU and a handful of other charities. Ba Da Bing opted to give their profits to the Nigerian Muslim Association of New York.
Byrne tours east coast USA in February and March before heading to San Francisco’s The Independent in April. Catch her in one of these venues while you can.
